Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

So far this year we climbed two amazing mountains, Half Dome and the South Sister….  So let’s make it three!

Climbing Mt. St. Helens requires a climbing permit so we had to plan ahead, and booked a date in September. Little did we know the forecast that day would be super cold with a chance of snow!

At 8,328 feet high, Mount St. Helens offers climbers a breathtaking view from the crater rim on a clear day. Although it is not a technical climb, it is strenuous and hazardous due to ice, large boulders, loose pumice, fast-changing weather and volcanism. We came prepared knowing it would be cold, we layered up and went for it anyway. It was quite an experience climbing up through the clouds to the crater rim just to get enough break in the clouds to see the vastness of your surroundings.
